Medieval pewter button in the shape of a rose.
This true-to-detail replica of a medieval pewter button in the shape of a rose blossom is made according to historical models from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance and has an eyelet on the back.
Pewter buttons in the shape of blossoms are often found in found material from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They were characteristic of the garments of this period, where long rows of buttons were fashionable for decorative fastening of clothing.
With the solidly cast-on eyelet on the underside, the medieval pewter button can be sewn onto the garment with a few stitches.
The size of the pewter button is 1.2 x 0.6 cm. The eyelet is 2 mm wide.
In the European Middle Ages, the pewter button hardly appeared before the middle of the 13th century and was primarily spread by oriental influences. In the Middle Ages, the pewter button frequently had a spherical shape, but flat and floral shapes were also not uncommon. Beside pewter buttons, in the Middle Ages buttons made of brass, bronze and even silver were also common.
Unlike today, however, the button was not inserted through a slit in the fabric, but was fastened to the hem of the garment and closed on the opposite side with an eyelet. Instead of having two or four holes, as is the case today, in the Middle Ages the pewter button was therefore almost always fitted with a small eyelet with which it could be sewn to the garment.
