Viking fire starter kit with tinder, flint and fire steel.
Here you can buy a whole Viking fire starter set with hand forged fire steel, flint stone and bulrush tinder.
The curved shape of the fire steel is typical of the Viking Age, but it was also common among Germanic and Slavic peoples in the early Middle Ages. The fire steel is made of carbon steel and produces sparks easily.
The fire starter kit comes with a flint, whose sharp edge is very good for creating a spark, and a waterproof plastic bag with nitrided tinder made from so-called bulrush (cattail), which can easily be made to smoulder.
The fire starter kit includes:
Viking period fire steel 10 x 4 cm.
1 grams of tinder
flint
Instructions for use in German and English.
Make fire like the Vikings did: With a little practice, you can easily start a fire with a fire steel, flint and the right tinder.
To do this, strike the sharp edge of a flint with a fire steel so that small sparks are created that jump to the tinder. To do this, you should hold the supplied bulrush tinder as close as possible to the edge of the flint.
Once the tinder has been made to glow, you can create a delicate flame by blowing steadily and carefully. You should "feed" it as quickly as possible with more tinder, for which rotten wood fibres, birch paper or thin pine shavings are suitable, for example.
