This special form of Viking fibula is called a polyhedron fibula after the polygonal, bevelled ends at the ends of the fibula. It was common during the Viking Age, mainly in the Baltic region between the 9th and 11th centuries.
Horseshoe brooches of this type are known from various sites, e.g. Papinsaari / Finland, Vindelgransele / Sweden, Haithabu / Germany and Lake Ladoga / Russia.
