Medieval pewter button from Tver in Russia.

This authentic replica of a Medieval pewter button was made true to detail after a historical model from the excavations in Tver in Russia and dates to the 13th to the 14th century.

Buttons in ball shape are well known from the Middle Ages and were characteristic for the drapery of that time, where long rows of buttons for a decorative closing were fashionable.

With the solid cast-on eyelet on the bottom, the bronze button can be sewn on the robe with a few stitches.

The pewter button replica has the size 1.5 x 0.8 cm. The eyelet is 2 mm wide.

The pewter button appeared in our country quite late and probably reached Europe through oriental influences via the trade routes of the merchants and crusaders across the Mediterranean. However, the pewter button was hardly widespread until the middle of the 13th century.

In the Middle Ages, a pewter button was often spherical in shape, although flat pewter buttons were just as common. Unlike today, however, a pewter button in the Middle Ages was fastened to the hem of the garment and closed with an eyelet on the opposite side, rather than being pushed through a slit in the fabric.
