Strap fitting from Vendel and Valsgärde.

Reproduction of a Vendel period belt fitting from the 6th century, based on models from the excavations in Vendel and Valsgärde / Sweden.

This strap fitting is based on two examples of belt fittings from the Vendel period, one from Valsgärde and the other from Vendel grave VII, both of which date to the 6th century AD and are typical of the late Vendel style.

The dimensions of the Vendel fitting are 4.4 x 2.4 cm.

The belt fitting is made of high-quality bronze casting and is also available in real silver-plated.

Fastening: There are four pins on the back of the Vendel strap fitting. To fasten the fitting, simply insert the pins through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tip of the pin inwards a little. If you then tap the pins flat with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the strap fitting will be stable and flat on the belt.

The Vendel style was named after the site of Vendel near Uppsala in Sweden and is the Scandinavian variant of Germanic animal ornamentation. Five variants of the Vendel style are distinguished for the Vendel period and are referred to as Vendel A - E or, by way of abbreviation, as the older (550-650 AD) and younger Vendel style (650-800 AD).

The Vendel style was mainly found on brooches and fittings found in boat graves and clearly borrowed from the animal ornamentation that had been widespread in the Anglo-Saxon region since the 7th century.
